What the avatar inherits from the recording.

Commission an AI avatar and what you are buying is the quality of the recording it gets built from. A phone clip at a desk produces an avatar with the desk baked in: a soft picture, light that wanders, echo on the voice. No tool recovers that, because it does not correct anything — it rebuilds what it was given.

Where an avatar pays off, and where it does not

It pays off wherever the same person has to say the same thing often: onboarding, product explanations, training, safety briefings, each in several languages. One shooting day there replaces a run of sessions that would otherwise put somebody in front of a camera every time.

It does not pay off where the moment matters. A greeting, an apology, an announcement in a crisis: the instant viewers notice nobody actually spoke, the effect turns against you.

What the tools require of the material

HeyGen, Synthesia and the rest ask for essentially the same thing: even light with no wandering shadows, a quiet background, a head-on camera and sound without room tail. Plus a defined amount of speaking time, between ten and thirty minutes depending on the provider.

Rights, consent and what happens next

Anyone letting their face be recorded should know beforehand what may be made from it. The material belongs to you. Rights to the generated avatar are settled by your tool provider, and the consent of the person on screen belongs in writing — especially when they are an employee who may later leave the company.

That is not a formality: an avatar that keeps talking after the person has gone is exactly the case nobody thought through in advance.

What an avatar recording costs

The shoot is short; the preparation decides. The tools need defined training sentences rather than free speech, and turning up without a script means spending half the time composing instead of speaking.
