A video podcast is more than a podcast with a camera pointed at it.

What separates it from audio is not the picture but what happens afterwards. One recording becomes the episode for the podcast platforms, the video for YouTube and a pile of cut-downs for social media. The same effort, several times the material.

What a video podcast actually needs

Three things decide whether an episode looks like anything: sound, light, and a picture that changes now and then. In that order. Nobody forgives bad sound; a middling picture they will.

How a recording day runs

You arrive, sit down and talk. Beforehand we agree how many people will be at the table, how long an episode should run and whether you want to record several back to back. There is no vision mixer in the room: you start it yourself, stop when you like, and nobody sits there watching.

Most people record three or four episodes in an afternoon. Between two of them there is a short break for water, the next guest and a moment to breathe. Recording alone, you barely need ten minutes.

Recording with guests

A guest is the fastest route to a podcast people actually want to hear. It is also the best excuse to approach someone who would never have answered an ordinary request: an invitation into a studio reads differently from asking for a meeting.

Allow around an hour per guest, arrival and warming up included. Four people at the table works; three is more comfortable, because everyone gets a word in without it turning into a panel.

What you end up with

One recording produces three things: the full episode as video, the audio track for Spotify and Apple Podcasts, and the cut-downs you use to point people at the episode. Cropping to vertical happens in the edit, not during the recording, so it is not something you have to think about while talking.

How often, and how long

Consistency beats length. An episode every fortnight, published reliably, does more than a season that stops in March. For most formats twenty to forty minutes is right; longer rarely gets finished.

Anyone who wants to keep that up records in blocks rather than one at a time. Which is why most people book half a day rather than an hour — and then have six weeks of peace.

What a video podcast costs

The honest answer depends on how much you do yourself. Recording is the cheap part. The edit is what costs, especially when every episode also has to yield vertical cut-downs.
